Trivia Tuesday: Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Today, as we celebrate Flag Day, take the time to stand and really listen to the words that are being recited when saying the Pledge of Allegiance; and reflect on the fact that many have sacrificed so much for that flag to continue to wave bravely and represent this country.

The General Executive Council of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers sat down and were able to get signed agreements with American Bridge Company, Bethlehem Steel Company and all remaining unsigned major steel erectors in the nation. Written agreements were finally in place after 32 years of contention and 25 years of only verbal understandings. Take a look at the picture on our Facebook page.

History Post Time! Beaver Stadium, the second largest stadium in the nation, with a seating capacity of 106,572 had very humble beginnings. Penn State's original location for football games was the 500-seat Beaver Field. It stood between today's Osmond and Frear Laboratories in the center of PSU's campus. November 6, 1893 marked the first game for Penn State against Western University of Pittsburgh which we now know as Pitt. The next - New Beaver field was built originally of wood in 1909 and converted to steel in 1936. After the 1959 season, the 30,000 seat stadium was dismantled, moved in 700 pieces to its current location, and reassembled with 16,000 additional seats. Beaver Stadium as we know it today has more than doubled in size from its early days with expansions in 1960, 1980, 1985, 1991 and again in 2001. More often than not, iron workers were a part of those expansions and renovations and can say they helped to build another piece of history. Check out the picture on our Facebook Page.

Some members even made special cases to hold their books protecting the cloth from fire. Stay tuned for additional history posts!

Safety Tip Monday! Falling does not just include falling from a beam. Falls can also occur during off-loading iron from flat-bed trucks. Here are some important things to remember and think of when off-loading iron:

* Evaluating loads for shifting during transport
* Process for releasing chains and straps
* Observing jobsite conditions, obstructions and overhead power lines
* Ensure proper crane set-up, configuration and communication with crane operator
* Anticipation of boom deflection and load drift during hoisting
* Working with limited space and traffic on jobsite
* Recognition that flat-bed trailers are not designed or suitable for fall arrest systems

Please keep these helpful pointers in mind when unloading a flat-bed truck! Stay tuned for additional safety tips!

History post time! Do you know the history behind the ball drop at Times Square in New York City? Dating back to 186 years ago in 1829, time balls were invented so ships at sea could adjust their chronometers while sailing. Towns where the new device was located would drop the ball at a specific time, usually noon or 1pm, for the sailors to sync to. Walter Palmer, The New York Time’s chief electrician, was inspired by this practice. With fireworks banned in New York City, a new celebration had to be established. In 1908 the first New Year’s Eve ball drop took place. A 700-pound ball made of iron and wood was designed for the event. The ball descended down the repurposed mainmast of the battleship USS New Mexico as a crowd of people below cheered at midnight. Over the years, the technology and materials were updated but the tradition stayed. The current ball weighs 11,875 pounds and is 12 feet in diameter. We hope you enjoyed this festive history post! Happy New Year and have a wonderful but safe holiday! See you next year!

History post time! Did you know that there are times that iron workers are sworn to secrecy? When working on large government projects that are top secret, all of those involved are sworn to keep the project details secret. An example of this would be when members from Local 155 in Fresno, California worked on fabricating, erecting and rigging facilities used in testing the F-117A Stealth Fighter Aircraft in Nevada. It was not until the fighter was unveiled to the public that members could talk about the project, and it was a few years later before an article appeared in The Ironworker magazine detailing the project. History post time! Did you know that Pittsburgh has set some hockey records? Not just in playing the sport, but with the arenas too. The Civic Arena, built in 1967, was the first in the world for major-sports arenas to have a retractable roof. At the time of closure, the arena was also the oldest arena to be used in hockey. During the Civic Arena’s lifetime, numerous musical performers held an audience, including The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Doors and Elvis Presley’s final New Year’s Eve show. The Civic Arena set a high bar for whatever facility replaced it and luckily, CONSOL Energy Center has exceeded expectations! Not only is CONSOL the first NHL arena to receive LEED Gold Certification, but it also has won numerous awards, such as “Best New Major Concert Venue” in the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards and “Best NHL Arena” in the Sports Business Journal reader poll. Stay tuned for additional history posts!

History post time! Being deemed the city of bridges, we appreciate the planning and work that goes into building one of these magnificent structures. We would like to take a look at the Golden Gate Bridge and the iron workers who helped build one of the world’s best-known bridges. Construction started on January 5th, 1933 and the bridge officially opened on May 28th, 1937. The 8,981 foot bridge used more than 100,000 tons of steel, 693,000 cubic yards of concrete, and 80,000 miles of wire cable. Each tower has about 600,000 field driven rivets, which is a total of 1,200,000 rivets between the two towers! Because this job was so dangerous, safety precautions were taken seriously. Hard hats were a requirement while on the job but these hats are primitive when compared to the type used now; they were made out of leather and looked similar to football helmets. The cable wire spanning the bridge was created by the same company that created the cable wire on the Brooklyn Bridge. During installation, a large net was placed under the structure and was essential in saving 19 lives as well as gave the workers comfort in knowing the protection was there if they slipped. One of the iron workers who did fall and was saved by the net was former General Vice President Dick Zampa, father of Al Zampa pictured below, who slipped on a wet girder and fell! To this day, you can still find iron workers working to maintain the bridge! Stay tuned for additional history posts!

John F. Kennedy – “The American Labor Movement has consistently demonstrated its devotion to the public interest. It is and has been good for all America.”

Safety Tip Monday! Steve Rank, head of the Safety & Health Department discussed fall hazards and protecting floor openings in the August 2015 Ironworker Magazine. Here are a few of the main bullets for you to review!

“When plywood is used for floor opening covers, the following strength and labeling standards apply:

* Covers shall be capable of supporting, without failure, at least twice the weight of employees, equipment, and materials that may be imposed on the cover at any one time.

* All covers shall be secured when installed so as to prevent accidental displacement by the wind, equipment, or employees.

* All covers shall be color coded or they shall be marked with the word “HOLE” or “COVER” to provide warning of the hazard.
In cases where the derrick or erection floor cannot be solidly planked or decked and access openings are present due to steel erection activities such as bolting, welding, guying, inspections, etc., the use of a Hazard Awareness Zone (HAZ) can be established as a warning to prevent unintended access by other ironworkers on the erection floor.
The following are four best practices and provisions when using a HAZ:

* The use of a HAZ is exclusive to the unfinished derrick or erection floor where work in progress requires floor openings to be uncovered during steel erection activities and for inspection purposes.

* The floor or working level where a HAZ is established shall be under the exclusive control of the steel erector and access by the controlling contractor or other trades personnel is prohibited.

* The HAZ shall be erected not less than 6 feet from the access openings and not more than 10 feet from the access opening.

* Training must be provided on the above to all employees working on a floor or working level where a HAZ has been established.”

We hope that you were able to take something away from these safety tips and hope that you stay safe while out on the job! Stay tuned for next month’s Safety Tip Monday!!

History post time! Labor Day is just around the corner and Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 celebrates this day by marching proudly through the streets of Pittsburgh. However, do you know the history of this national holiday? The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City where 10,000 workers took unpaid time to march from City Hall to Union Square in the first Labor Day parade. The Central Labor Union decided the first Monday in September would be deemed as the “workingmen’s holiday” and the idea spread as more labor organizations grew throughout the country. The tradition of a parade was proposed to show the strength and spirit of the trades and labor organizations throughout the community. It was not until 1894 that Labor Day became a federal holiday to celebrate the achievements of labor workers throughout the year. Stay tuned for additional history posts!

History Post Time! Did you know during the Great Depression iron workers used to jump onto trains to get to different jobs around the country? “Riding the rails” was dangerous but times were desperate. Men would travel together in groups of 2 or 4 to different jobs around the country. At the time, most trains ran on steam so the men would find the closest water tank and hide in the bushes or weeds until a train came. Then they would jump onto the train and hopefully find an empty train car that they could stay in, sheltered from the rain and wind. However, oftentimes iron workers would find themselves inside of a car with murderers, cutthroats and other “rough” people. They would ride the train to the town closest to the job, jump off and walk the rest of the way staying in a make-shift camp site for however long the job was. Stay tuned for additional History Posts!!

Safety Tip Monday!

Structural collapse during steel erection is one of the “Deadly Dozen” hazards. Preplanning and following the appropriate safety measures is especially important when it comes to stabilizing cantilevered structures.

The Ironworkers Magazine states, “When the field connections are designed with bolted holes and/or welded connections, it may be necessary to temporarily support the structural members until the entire connection has been completed. Erection aids are commonly specified for cantilevered connections, but in some cases such specifications may not be denoted.   Shop and erection drawings should show all erection aids and necessary instructions for the steel erection contractor. Erection aid preferences may vary from area to area and from company to company.”

Remember, this year’s safety campaign is “See something - Say something” so make sure you stay safe while out on a job! Stay tuned for next month’s Safety Tip!

History post time! Did you know that the original Sixth Street Bridge in Pittsburgh and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City have the same designer? Mr. John Roebling built the original Sixth Street Bridge as well as the Allegheny Aqueduct Bridge, demolished in 1861, and the Smithfield Street Bridge, which was replaced and updated in 1883. All three of these Pittsburgh bridges were replaced or updated due to the increased traffic on the bridges as well as the rivers. However the original Brooklyn Bridge still stands mainly due to Mr. Roebling’s impeccable ability to design the bridge to be six times stronger than he thought it needed to be. Did you know that the apprenticeship program has roots dating back thousands of years. In “The Ironworker” magazine an article explains the history behind the word “apprentice”.

“In medieval England, apprenticeship agreements called indentures were made between master and apprentice. The English word 'pre-tence' or 'apprentice' came into use during this time; it derives from the Latin word apprehendere, ‘to lay hold of’. The relationship between master and apprentice was much like parent and child, with the master’s authority extending to every phase of the apprentice’s life; the master provided food, clothing, housing and tools. He taught the trade and instructed in ethics, morals and proper behavior, usually for a period of seven years. At the end of training, the apprentice had to develop a ‘masterpiece’ as a final exam. If he passed he became a ‘journeyman’. When he could pay the necessary fees and could set-up his own shop, he became a master.”

Over time, unions have adapted the role of the apprentice into their own trade, making it an important part of training.

The total length is 1,598 feet and reaches a height of approximately 240 feet above ground. What makes the bridge unique is the 5 spans that keep the bridge suspended as well as being the world’s longest concrete arch span structure at the time of completion. Prior to the bridge being built, it would take a motorist an average of 40 minutes to cross the valley; after the bridge, it dropped the commute down to just a few minutes! History Time!

Below is a column that Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote about the iron workers in the year 1950. It gives you an inside peak as to what work was like for iron workers over 65 years ago.

How much we usually take for granted about the work of our fellow human beings! Somehow I had always thought of these huge skyscrapers as they are when finished, and had never before seen the skilled work and calm courage that goes into putting up the framework. Just walking across from one beam to another is an amazing acrobatic feat of balance with sure death below if you lose your head for a minute. The workers don’t wear belts and are not hooked to anything, yet they behave just as though theirs was any ordinary occupation with ordinary risks which all of us take in our daily work.

I have long known what it means to be a miner, and I can well understand the responsibilities and risks of a pilot or of the men in the Army and Navy in various branches of the service. But here were men doing work that goes on day in and day out and is part of our daily lives, and I had never given a thought to the extraordinary skill and physical ability required to carry it through successfully. I was overcome at my own lack of imagination and understanding; but I shall be grateful to these men in the future, and have a better understanding of what this kind of work requires.”

Safety Tip Monday!

Steve Rank, the Executive Director of Safety & Health, stated in the June/July 2014 issue of The Ironworker some safety tips to avoid hazards when working over or near water!

Here are a few important highlights for you to consider and know!

“The OSHA 1926.106(a) & (b) states: ‘Employees working over or near water, where the danger of drowning exists, shall be provided with U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket or buoyant work vests and, prior to and after each use, the buoyant work vests or life preservers shall be inspected for defects which would alter their strength or buoyancy. Defective units shall not be used.’

OSHA has determined by letter clarification that, ‘In general, when continuous fall protection is used (without exception) to prevent employees from falling into the water, the employer has effectively removed the drowning hazards, and life jackets or buoyant work vests are not needed.’

However, OSHA has determined by letter of clarification that ‘the use of safety nets as fall protection during marine construction activities usually will not eliminate the drowning hazard. In many cases (such as in bridge construction), there is a risk that materials heavy enough to damage the nets may fall. In such cases the personal flotation device and the other applicable requirements of 1926.106 apply.’”

Stay tuned for more Safety Tips next month and be sure to be safe while on the job!

History Time!! The Fountain at Point State Park was completed in 1974 and is one of the city’s greatest highlights. Did you know that the fountain has been compared to an iceberg where only 10% of the structure is visible? Under the fountain pump, there is a two-story building housing a water pump that pulls water from the “underground river” to fuel the fountain above. The fountain is held in place by 130 strong caissons (large chambered steel pipes) which are driven down 60 feet and filled with concrete acting like roots to keep the fountain from rising or floating on the water! Stay tuned for additional history posts!

History day! Take a look at the photo posted on our Facebook page taken in 1962 of the IBM building being erected by iron workers from Local Union No. 3. The IBM building, now known as United Steelworkers building, located in downtown Pittsburgh has a frame that is designed as a truss wall, which is carrying the weight of the building to contact points on the ground. This means that there are no interior, vertical columns creating the early model for an open-space office! Stay tuned for additional history posts!

Iron Worker Safety Tip Day! In the January 2015 issue of The Ironworker there is an article titled “Rebar Drop Test Illustrates Impalement Hazards and Unsafe Practice” which highlights the unsafe practice of fabricating rebar dowels with 90 degree bends which can cause impalements. If you missed the article, here are the key points discussed!

One of the “deadly dozen hazards” is the impalement hazards by rebar dowels. A dowel bent at 90 degrees can still cause injury and impalements to people working on the construction site. A safety test was conducted at the Ironworkers Regional Training Facility in Benicia, California demonstrating what happens when a 250-pound sandbag is dropped from a distance of 10 feet onto #5 rebar dowels fabricated with 90-degree bends. When dropped, the sandbag was impaled by the rebar demonstrating how unsafe this practice is. OSHA submitted an official letter to the Iron Workers International stating, “Cal/OSHA does not accept the bending or hooking of rebar as an acceptable method of impalement protection. An employer that bends or hooks rebar for employee impalement protection instead of providing approved covers or troughs is in violation of Title 8, section 1712. Such an employer would be placing their employees at risk of serious injury.”

Be sure to stay safe while on a job and check back next month for more safety tips!

We would like to introduce you to one of our Apprentice instructors, Mr. Jim McDonough. Jim has been with the iron workers union for 15 years and has been an instructor for 2 years. He was working in the nursing industry before becoming an iron worker and was recommended to the union when one of his friends commented on his strong work ethic. Jim applied and the rest is history!

Jim is one of the first to work with incoming apprentices, teaching them safety training and ornamental iron. He said the best part of his position is dealing with the apprentices and future iron workers. Jim says the best moment while with Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 was when he was asked to be an instructor for the apprenticeship program; he said he is always open to change and improvement within this fast developing construction industry.

When not teaching the apprentices, Jim enjoys spending time with his three beautiful daughters and amazing wife. On the weekends, Jim enjoys playing music, working on his properties and traveling with his family. He said the most interesting place he has been was to Nashville, TN where he was able to play guitar on the stage where Johnny Cash played.

History time!! Did you know that our official International title was not always named “International Association of Bridge, Structural, Reinforcing and Ornamental Iron Workers”? When the union first started in 1896, we were titled “The International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers of America”, a few years later the name was changed to “The International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers”. Then, from 1914 to 1917, we were named “The International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers and Piledrivers”. It wasn’t until recently that the International title was changed to what it is today. Stay tuned for additional history posts!

William Sullivan joined our union over half a century ago in 1951 and has been described as “the most dedicated and knowledgeable Union Officer” by his peers. This month we had the privilege to interview Bill and would like to share his story and guidance with you.

Bill’s story starts in June of 1946 when he graduated high school. He immediately enlisted the Army and served with the occupation forces in Japan until January of 1948. When released from the service, he went to business training college and graduated in 1950 with a diploma in Accounting and Business Administration. It was not until Bill was in a car accident with no insurance that he realized how important benefits were and quit his bookkeeping job to work on the construction site for the Mellon building. It was on this job that he met members from Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 and was asked to join our union.

It was not long before Bill took an officer position in the local; he was elected for the Examining Board in 1957. During this time he, also served as a member of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee. Then in 1959, he was elected as Recording Secretary, a position he held for 6 years before being elected to his first term as Business Agent. During Bill’s time as Recording Secretary, he also became the spokesman for the wage negotiating committee.

In the 1967 election, Bill was not only reelected but also holds the record for most votes in an election for Business Agent as well as the youngest person to ever be elected.  This was one of the best moments Bill ever experienced within the union; the day many of his fellow Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 members came to vote for him as Business Agent. He made many improvements to the union during his 10 years as Business Agent which included establishing a jurisdictional file that had been used for many decades by newly elected Agents.

President John H. Lyons appointed Bill a General Organizer in 1975, which led him to become President of the District Council of Eastern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia in 1979, a position he held for 5 consecutive elections without opposition. Then, in August of 1985, Bill was appointed to the office of Ninth General Vice President by General President Juel D. Drake. It was during the 38th Convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada that Bill was nominated and elected to the position of First General Vice President of the International Association which he held until retirement in 1995.

When asked what has changed the most since Bill joined the union in 1951, he said the way that business is done. “When I was working job sites, we were in the age of pencil. Now everyone is in the age of computers. Before, when we wanted to know about a job, we had to go out to the job site. Now you can just jump onto a computer to find out information which cuts back on time spent in the car!”

Advice he would like to pass onto the membership is to learn all phases of the industry and continue to learn throughout your iron working career. Bill also said to “always do a day’s work for a day’s pay”. We would like to thank William Sullivan for letting us interview him. Be sure to check back next month for another interview!

St. Patrick’s Day is next Tuesday, so in spirit of the holiday here is some interesting Irish/ iron worker history! The famous photograph titled “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” hangs in many iron workers’ homes as a symbol of generations past who got us to where we are today. Did you know that two of the men are supposedly from Ireland? The claim is that the man on the far right holding the bottle, Patrick “Sonny” Glynn, and the man on the far left, Matty O’Shaughnessy, were iron workers from Ireland in New York City to help build the Empire State Building!

Stay tuned for additional history posts and have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day!!

February 19, 2015

This month we had the opportunity to interview Larry Collins, a 41-year lifetime member. During our phone conversation, he told us many interesting facts about Iron Workers Local Union No. 3.  He offered some great advice for new and old members alike, as well as sharing some of his own Local 3 stories! Larry grew up in a household that instilled the basic principles and ethics of hard work and dedication. His father was a member of Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 and was on the original committee that outlined and started the formal Apprenticeship Training Program.  In 1966, Larry worked out of Local 3 on a permit.

Larry took a break from iron working to serve over three years in the United States Army, including 1 year in Vietnam with the Hundred and First Airborne Division; he was discharged as a captain. Upon his return to Pittsburgh, he applied and was accepted into the Apprenticeship Program.  Larry followed his father’s example because he knew the work was steady; he had accumulated some experience within the industry before his enlistment; and he enjoyed the work.

Over the years, Larry worked on many projects in and around the city of Pittsburgh including repair work on numerous bridges including the Smithfield and the 10th Street Bridges, as well as some downtown buildings including the Oxford and PPG Buildings. In addition to those, he worked in the steel mills and powerhouses. However, one of his favorite projects was working on the Highland Park Bridge. The project began in the late 1986, taking 14 months to complete. Larry was proud of the fact that a project of that scale finished ahead of schedule. Larry said he worked with a great group of people and that the contractor originally did not want to work with union iron workers but was extremely pleased with the work that was done. Throughout his iron working career, Larry followed the structural steel erection and ornamental path but also did some work with rebar and sheeting.

Throughout his years of working on the iron, Larry stayed very active within the Union Hall by attending meetings regularly and being involved with the apprenticeship school. He taught apprentices two to three nights a week from 1981 to 1996, after having worked all day. He said that teaching was one of the most rewarding positions he held within the union. In 1990, he started to work inside of the office as the Recording Secretary; a position that he held for two terms. Also during this period, he served from time to time as an Assistant Business Agent. In the 1996 election, Larry ran against two other members for the Financial-Secretary Treasurer position. He won the election and held this position for 3 terms until 2004 when he retired. During his years in the Iron Workers Local Union No. 3, he attended three International Conventions.

Larry mentioned multiple times that his best memories revolved around working with a good group of hardworking men and women getting the job done, but having fun and laughing while working. He said the most important factor was making sure that everyone got home safely at the end of the day. When asked what had changed the most within the union since he joined, he stated, “The safety regulations have changed the most, and all for the better. When I started, tying off was not part of our daily work, and the few men who did tie off, did not have the best or safest equipment. Now men are trained to put on the hard hat and tie off without thinking. This is the norm with a whole new generation, which is great.”

When asked what he thought was the most interesting fact about the iron workers, Larry stated that Iron Workers Local Union No. 3’s charter was taken away from 1917 to 1921.  He said that we are one of the only unions to have kept their local union number after being reinstated by the International.  He also said that Local 3 has a great reputation throughout the country for being a strong and dependable local. Its membership should be proud to be iron workers from Local Union No. 3.

The last question we asked Larry was what advice he would like to pass on to our members.  He said taking safety serious is the most important thing. Members need to work together to ensure everyone is safe on a job site, so at the end of the day, everyone can return home to their families. In addition to continuously bettering and upgrading your skills, you want to give your union and union contractor your best. Larry will always be proud to be a union iron worker and a member of Local 3.
The last statement he made was, “I will always be thankful to Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 and the signatory union contractors who provided the opportunity for me to earn a decent wage and have a pension upon retirement. This all enabled me and Karen, my wife of over 40 years, to raise and provide for four fabulous daughters and grandchildren. Thank you.”

We would like to thank Larry Collins for sharing such wonderful stories and advice with us! Keep an eye out next month for another interview!

History day! Did you know that International Headquarters was not always located in Washington, D.C.? Originally, the city that the Secretary-Treasurer lived in would become International’s Headquarters causing a lot of moving in a short period of time. In 1920, General President Morrin moved the International Headquarters to St. Louis where it remained until 1955. Then the iron workers followed the trend other trade unions establishing a location in Washington, D.C. when they rented an office space and opened a local branch. It was not until 1968 at the 33rd Convention that a resolution was passed to move the International Headquarters to D.C. Stay tuned for additional history posts!

January 21, 2015

Earlier this month we had the pleasure of interviewing member Robert Spiller. After about an hour of conversation on the phone, we came away amazed by his stories and wanted to share them with you; as well as some interesting advice that members might appreciate!

Before joining the union, Robert was working on Neville Island as a welder; he remembers enjoying his job but could not get used to th...e inconsistency of work. He was first introduced to the Iron Workers Union when a friend of his asked if he was interested in taking the apprenticeship test. The two rode into the city together, however only one passed the test and started down the road of success in the iron working industry. In October of 1967, Robert was initiated into the apprenticeship program; he finished the program on time and graduated in 1970.

Over the years, Robert worked all phases and jobs of the trade. He worked on the majority of buildings and bridges around the Pittsburgh area including St. Francis Medical Center, which was torn down in 2008 to build Consol Energy Center. He said, “Iron working fascinates me – the climbing, putting buildings up – I was very lucky to really like what I did for a living.” The last job in the field that Robert was on before starting work inside the hall was the reconstruction of the Liberty Bridge in 1983.

In 1981, Robert was elected Vice President of the union, and in 1983 he traded in his tool belt for an office desk when he was appointed President. In 1984, Robert ran and won the election for presidency solidifying his officer position; he said the proudest day of his life was when the members of Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 elected him for the position. He was then hired by both business agents to be their assistant, which was very uncommon to have one person be the assistant agent of both areas. He reminisced to 30 years ago when Iron Workers Local Union No. 3’s business agents had unspoken territories, which they called “Downtown” and “Outside” instead of “North” and “South” like we do today.

In 1985, when the Financial Secretary-Treasurer, Dan Daugherty, went to the Water Authority, Robert appointed himself as the FST, a position that he stayed in until 1994. Then, in October of 1994, he was appointed General Organizer, and in 1995, Robert was elected President of the Eastern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia District Council, a position he held for 14 years without opposition. In October of 2000, Robert was appointed Ninth General Vice President of the Iron Workers International and the following year at the International Convention, he ran unopposed and was elected Sixth General Vice President. Robert ended his career as First General Vice President when he retired in 2008.

During the interview with Robert, he referenced a time when the hall was packed with members playing cards in the dayroom or having conversations in the front sitting area. During one election, Robert remembers 27 members running for executive board and men spending the election weekend camping in the parking lot gearing up for the big day.

The main advice Robert would like to tell apprentices and members is that your reputation is key – this is what precedes you through your iron working career. He said, “You only have one thing to sell as an iron worker – that is yourself.” The last thing that Robert said was “I have visited many of the Iron Worker Unions within the country and Local 3 is one of the best locals. The union is run in accordance with the Iron Worker’s Constitution and By-Laws; the business is conducted the way it should be.”

We would like to thank Robert Spiller for sharing such wonderful stories and advice with us! Keep an eye out next month for another interview!

Iron Worker Safety Tip Day! In the October’s issue of The Ironworker, Steven Rank wrote an article titled “Protecting Floor and Roof Opening”. He states that the floor openings and covers are one of the “deadly dozen” hazards in the ironworking trade. A few points he makes to ensure safety when working in a hazardous area are:

1) Covers shall be capable of supporting, without failure, at least twice the weight of employees, equipment and materials that may be imposed on the cover at any one time.

2) All covers shall be secured when installed so as to prevent accidental displacement by the window, equipment or employees.

3) All covers shall be color coded or they shall be marked with the word “HOLE” or “COVER” to provide warning of the hazard. Be sure to check back next month for more safety tips!

Ready for some history?! Did you know that the U.S. Steel Building was the first structure in the nation to use liquid-filled, fireproofed columns as a safety feature? U.S. Steel Corporation wanted to make a statement about the strength and beauty of steel. This was the tallest building in the country (at the time) with an outer facing completely made of Cor-Ten Steel. The building was completed in 1973 and towers over the city of Pittsburgh standing at 64 stories high.

Thirteen years ago, our country was attacked, thousands lost their lives and a tragedy shook America. September 11th, 2001 changed the world as the first plane hit the side of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Just over two hours after the first building was struck, they started falling to the ground. These buildings were a symbol of American ingenuity and prosperity and were built by ironworkers.

Today we remember all of those who have lost their lives including five iron workers brothers – Bill Cashman of Local 46, Peter Vega of Local 40, Ken Watson of Local 580, John Collins of Local 580, and David Weiss of Local 580.

Have you ever wondered why Pittsburgh is Local Union No. 3 even though the union was established here in the city? In Chicago, during the 1880’s, a group of 20 iron workers started the Bridge Builder’s Mutual Association, which was formed to assure that members would have a proper burial if passing away while on a job. They also supported each other during sickness and injury. This group would later turn into the Bridge and Construction Men’s Union and then, on February 4th, 1896, into the Iron Workers Local Union No. 1.

Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 - 4th Annual Contractors & Construction Professionals’ Open House and 18th Annual Outstanding Apprentice Competition

On Thursday, April 21st, 2011, Iron Workers Local Union No. 3’s Apprenticeship Facility opened its doors to contractors, architects, state representatives, political figureheads, OSHA officials, vendors, and many more for its 4th Annual Contractors & Construction Professionals’ Open House and 18th Annual Outstanding Apprentice Competition.

The event began with interactive classroom and training demonstrations throughout the facility given by the apprentices and apprentice instructors.  The goal was to build awareness of the training that Local #3 provides to its apprentices as well as the upgrading courses provided to its journeymen.

The third year apprentices, who had been completing various parts of the Apprentice Competition throughout the week, wrapped up the last part of the competition by competing in the famed column climb.  After the scores were tallied, the outstanding apprentices that would move on to the regional competition in Toledo were Tom Kibbe with an overall score of 81.29 and Adam Davis with an overall score of 80.23.
